History of Camping: Origins and Early Development

Where it all began

Historically, camping dates back to ancient times, when military expeditions relied on tents made of fabric and animal skins for shelter.
The practice gained educational significance around 1860, when it began to be used as part of early youth development. This idea would later be expanded by Baden-Powell, who, in 1908, created the Scouting movement — spreading rapidly across Europe, especially after World War II.

The Rise of Camping

As large industrial cities began to grow, people felt an increasing need to escape urban life and reconnect with nature.
Camping gradually became a leisure activity and a form of tourism, leading to the creation of several associations around the world. One of the most important is the International Federation of Camping and Caravanning (FICC), headquartered in Switzerland.

Baden-Powell and the Origins of Scouting

In 1887, Baden-Powell took part in a military campaign against the Zulus in Africa. Shortly after, he was promoted to Major, and in 1896 he led an expedition against the Matabele in Rhodesia.
This period played a crucial role in shaping his ideas, as many of the foundations of Scouting were influenced by his experiences in the field — especially those involving camping and survival.

During this time, he formed a friendship with the American scout Frederick Russell Burnham, known for his skills in woodcraft.
Burnham introduced him to techniques inspired by the American West, which would later influence the Scouting philosophy.
It was also during this period that Baden-Powell adopted his famous Stetson-style hat, inspired by Burnham.

The Birth of a Global Movement

In early 1908, Baden-Powell published Scouting for Boys in six biweekly installments. At the time, he had no idea that this publication would spark a worldwide movement.
Soon after, he retired from the Army as a lieutenant-general and dedicated his life to Scouting — what he called his “second life.”

In 1912, he traveled around the world to connect with scouts in different countries, helping transform Scouting into a global brotherhood.
The movement grew rapidly, reaching millions of members worldwide within a few years.
In recognition of his contributions, King George V granted him the title of Baron Baden-Powell of Gilwell. Despite this honor, he remained known simply as Baden-Powell to scouts around the world.

A Message from Baden-Powell
"Happiness does not come from being rich, nor merely from being successful in one's career.
One step towards happiness is to become healthy and strong while young, so that one may be useful and enjoy life later. The study of nature will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things the world is. Look at the good side of things instead of the bad. The best way to find happiness is to give happiness to others. Try to leave this world a little better than you found it."

How did camping originate?

Camping originated from humanity’s basic need for shelter and protection against weather conditions and wild animals while exploring unknown territories.
As we know it today — as a leisure activity and a way to connect with nature — camping developed in England in the early 20th century.

Camping in Brazil

Camping in Brazil began around 1910, when the navy introduced Scouting to the country.
Until the 1960s, camping was mostly practiced in a wild and simple way, using only tents. In 1964, the first trailer manufacturer in Brazil — Turiscar — was created, marking a new phase in the activity by offering more practical and modern equipment.
Camping associations also began to grow, with the Camping Club of Brazil becoming one of the main representatives of the activity in the country.

The Evolution of Camping

Over the years, camping equipment became increasingly modern, lightweight, and practical.
More people began to adopt camping not just as a hobby, but as a lifestyle.
However, in the 1990s, the activity faced a decline in Brazil due to rising fuel prices, economic instability, toll costs, and a lack of government incentives.
Camping remains an important segment of tourism, focused on leisure and direct contact with nature. It is an itinerant activity, where individuals carry their own shelter — meeting one of humanity’s most basic needs: protection.

Motorhomes and Modern Camping

Motorhomes have become one of the most popular options in modern camping, offering comfort similar to fixed housing.
One of the biggest setbacks for caravanning in Brazil came with the 1997 traffic code, which restricted trailer towing for drivers with standard licenses.
This led to a sharp decline in trailer production and impacted the entire sector.
As a result, motorhomes became the preferred alternative.

Camping Around the World

In countries like the United States, camping often takes the form of organized camps, with infrastructure such as dormitories and dining facilities.
There are also trailer camps and structured camping areas designed for long stays.

Camping for Children and Youth

In Brazil, there are many camps designed for children and teenagers, often located in rural areas with full infrastructure.
These camps are supervised by trained staff who organize activities, games, and group experiences.
Usually lasting about a week, these experiences help young people develop independence, social skills, and a deeper connection with nature.

Wild Camping (Natural Camping)

Some campers prefer a more extreme and immersive experience: wild camping.
This type of camping takes place in remote areas, with no infrastructure, requiring full preparation and awareness of potential risks.
In these situations, it is essential to plan carefully, bring the right equipment, and understand survival basics.
